We went for our 20 week ultrasound on Mar. 10, 2014. This was the day we learned what a “Congenital Heart Defect” was.  The doctor told us that Caleb had “Tricuspid Atresia”.  After lots of research and talking with other heart families, we made the decision to travel to Boston Children’s Hospital for a consult the following month. After a day’s worth of testing, we found out that Caleb actually has a 6 heart defects: Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome, Tricuspid Stenosis, ASD, VSD, Coarctation of the Aorta, and Transposed Great Arteries. We were devastated, but we began to prepare for the inevitable; Caleb would need a series of open heart surgeries to save his life.

Caleb was born on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 5:21 pm. He weighed 6 lb 14 oz and was 19.5 inches long. He underwent his 1st open heart surgery on July 23rd; he was only 2 days old. His recovery was not without some bumps in the road…he had a chylous effusion and needed to be on skimmed breastmilk…he gained weight slowly…we had to fortify his milk. Overall, he recovered beautifully!  He showed us how strong he really is!

On January 11th, the three of us traveled back to Boston for Caleb’s 2nd surgery. He did amazing during a full day of pre-op testing, but had some difficulty recovering from the cardiac catherization. On January 15th, Caleb had his 2nd open heart surgery (at not even 6 months of age). He did even better the 2nd time around! His surgeon said he was the “biggest baby” that he’s ever done that procedure on! Caleb came home in 6 days!

Since coming home from his 2nd surgery, Caleb feels better than ever! He is happiest when mommy & daddy are both home. He LOVES Mickey Mouse and playing with the dog.  He is super inquisitive and loves to learn.  He thinks daddy is the funniest person and loves laughing! He does not like to wear socks or nap! He prefers when his environment is calm and relaxing. Caleb loves any type of music and can bounce in his jumperoo for hours if you let him! He is the best boy in the world <3
