Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defect in the United States. On November 23, 2011 we were blessed with our own heart hero…Gavin. At 20 weeks into our pregnancy, Gavin was diagnosed with Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), coarctation of the aortic arch, and a VSD. He was born at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and undoubtedly had a challenging road ahead of him. Gavin underwent a seven-hour open heart surgery with Dr. Emile Bacha at only six days old. Thirteen days later, Gavin returned to the operating room to have a pacemaker put in; complete heart block being a complication of his first surgery.

As we are putting Gavin’s story into words, we are even more amazed at his strength and courage…even at such a young age. After two heart surgeries before he was three weeks old and six and a half weeks in the NICU, Gavin has shown us what is truly important in life.
